The Google Gemini Partnership Behind Siri AI

Here's where precision matters. Apple's June 8 press release does not mention Google or Gemini once — it credits "the next generation of Apple Foundation Models that run on device and on servers using Private Cloud Compute."¹

The Google connection is confirmed separately. In a January 12, 2026 joint statement, Apple and Google announced a multi-year collaboration under which "the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology," powering Apple Intelligence features including the new Siri.² Per the statement, "After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google's AI technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models."² Apple reportedly evaluated proposals from OpenAI and Anthropic before choosing Google.³

The financial details remain unconfirmed by either company. Siri AI splits work between on-device Apple Foundation Models and server models running in Private Cloud Compute. Which Devices Support Siri AI?

Apple Intelligence and Siri AI in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 require:¹

The most advanced on-device model — which powers the expressive voices and upgraded dictation — needs more headroom: iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPad (M4) or later with at least 12GB of unified memory, Mac (M3) or later with at least 12GB of unified memory, or Apple Vision Pro (M5).¹

Note the distinction: iOS 27 itself supports iPhone 11 and newer, so older iPhones get the OS update — just not Siri AI or Apple Intelligence.⁶
