[Alex]: Welcome back to the Nerd Level Tech AI Cast—the show where we break down the latest in AI, gadgets, and occasionally, the mysteries of Jamie’s browser tabs. I’m Alex. [Jamie]: And I’m Jamie! Today, we’re talking about something that has me actually excited to say “Hey Siri” again—Siri AI. Apple just dropped a whole new version at WWDC 2026, and it’s… well, it’s a lot. Alex, is this finally the Siri we’ve all been waiting for, or just more hype? [Alex]: Oh, it’s real, Jamie. This isn’t just a fresh coat of paint or another voice option. Apple’s rebuilt Siri from the ground up—it’s now called "Siri AI," and it runs on a Frankenstein’s monster of Apple’s own models and Google’s Gemini. Yes, you heard that right—Apple and Google, holding hands in the AI playground. [Jamie]: Wait, back up. Did you just say Apple’s using Google’s AI? That sounds like a plot twist from a Silicon Valley soap opera. [Alex]: [Laughs] I know, right? But it’s true. Apple’s new “Apple Foundation Models” are actually based on Google’s Gemini—the same AI behind a lot of Google’s magic. There was a joint statement back in January: Apple gets to use a custom Gemini model—reportedly with 1.2 trillion parameters—running both on-device and in the cloud. But, of course, Apple wraps it all up in their privacy blanket. [Jamie]: Is that why they kept talking about “Private Cloud Compute” during the keynote? It sounded fancy but kind of vague, like a tech buzzword generator had a field day. [Alex]: [Chuckles] Pretty much! Here’s the rundown: for lighter stuff like searching your messages or photos, Siri AI uses models right on your device. Heavier lifting—like answering complex web questions—gets sent to Apple’s servers, but Apple promises your personal data never leaves your control. Everything’s encrypted, and outside experts can even review how it works. [Jamie]: So, Apple’s like, “Sure, we’ll use Google’s brain—but we’ll make sure it doesn’t see what’s inside our heads.” Classic Apple! [Alex]: Exactly. This is classic Apple: own the experience, keep the privacy, and let Google do the heavy lifting under the hood. [Jamie]: Alright, so what’s actually new with Siri AI? I saw “dedicated app” flash by in the keynote—what’s that about? [Alex]: Good catch! For the first time, Siri gets its own app. Imagine a chat app where you can see your whole conversation history with Siri, synced across your iPhone, Mac, iPad—even your Apple Watch and Vision Pro. Start a conversation on your Mac, continue it on your iPhone while walking the dog. No more losing that brilliant midnight idea you dictated into your phone! [Jamie]: I love it. Finally, I can ask Siri to remind me where I put my keys, and then ask her again later when I forget what she told me the first time. [Alex]: [Laughs] Exactly. And Siri AI can now do much more with “personal context.” Let’s say a friend texted you a restaurant name last week—ask Siri to find it, and she’ll scan your messages and pull it up. Or she can dig through your email for that ancient hotel confirmation number you need at check-in. [Jamie]: Okay, that’s cool, but is this going to be creepy? Like, will Siri start suggesting therapy after reading my group chats? [Alex]: [Smirks] I mean, if Siri starts recommending you take a vacation after seeing your text history, maybe listen! But seriously, everything runs with Apple’s privacy in mind. And you control what data Siri can access—it’s not just reading your secrets for fun. [Jamie]: What about actually talking to Siri? Is it still “Hey Siri,” or do I have to learn a secret handshake? [Alex]: [Laughs] No secret handshake—yet. You can still use “Hey Siri,” but there are new ways too. On iPhone, just swipe down from the Dynamic Island. On iPad and Mac, Siri AI lives inside Spotlight, and you can right-click on stuff—like images or text—and ask Siri about it directly. On Vision Pro, Siri shows up as a floating 3D assistant you can summon just by looking at it and speaking. [Jamie]: That’s wild. I’m already picturing myself looking at my fridge through Vision Pro, asking, “Siri, what can I make with three eggs and existential dread?” [Alex]: [Laughs] She might suggest an omelet—with a side of mindfulness meditation. [Jamie]: Nice. [Alex]: Let’s talk features. Visual Intelligence is everywhere now. On iPhone, there’s a new Camera mode where you point, snap a photo, and ask Siri questions about what you see. Want to know the nutritional value of your lunch? Or split a dinner bill with Apple Cash? Siri AI’s got you. [Jamie]: Wait, can it finally help me figure out what kind of plant I keep forgetting to water? [Alex]: Yep! And on Mac, there’s a keyboard shortcut for Siri AI, so you can ask for help wherever you are, and on iPad, it’s built into screenshots. Totally integrated. [Jamie]: What about writing? I heard something about new writing tools. [Alex]: Good memory! Siri AI can help you draft and edit text anywhere you type—Mail, Messages, even most third-party apps. And it learns your style. If you’re the kind of person who emails your boss in bullet points but texts your friends in memes, Siri keeps it consistent. Plus, it proofreads as you go. [Jamie]: Sweet. Finally, my emails can sound professional, and my group texts can stay unhinged. [Alex]: [Smiling] The best of both worlds. [Jamie]: So, who actually gets to try all this? Is my old iPhone 13 finally obsolete? [Alex]: Not obsolete, but not getting Siri AI, either. You’ll need an iPhone 16 or newer, or an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max. For iPad, it’s the M1 models and up. Macs need at least an M1 chip, and you’ll need the latest Apple Watch or Vision Pro for the full experience. The fanciest features—like the expressive voices and advanced dictation—need even newer hardware, like iPhone 17 Pro or Mac M3 with 12GB of memory. [Jamie]: So, if I walk into the Apple Store with my iPhone 12, asking for Siri AI, they’ll just hand me a pamphlet and a box of tissues? [Alex]: [Laughs] Pretty much. You’ll still get iOS 27, but not the new Siri AI magic. Time to start saving up! [Jamie]: And when can folks actually use this? [Alex]: Developer betas are out now—so if you’re a developer, you can play today. Public beta is expected mid-July, and the final release should hit in September with iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate. But—big caveat—if you’re in the EU, Siri AI is delayed on iPhone and iPad because of the Digital Markets Act. Mac, Watch, and Vision Pro users in the EU will get it, though. And in China, Apple’s still working through regulatory stuff, so it’ll take a bit longer. [Jamie]: Always the legal fine print. And how does this Siri AI stack up against ChatGPT or Gemini? I mean, should I still keep my ChatGPT tab open? [Alex]: Depends on what you need. ChatGPT is still king for creative writing and complex reasoning. Gemini is great for real-time Google Search. Siri AI’s superpower is being woven into your Apple life—searching your messages, controlling your device, and all that, with privacy. So, if you’re all-in on Apple, it’s a game changer. If you want to chat with other AIs, iOS 27 actually lets you plug in Gemini, Claude, or ChatGPT as extensions. [Jamie]: So, basically, Apple finally made Siri the assistant we’ve all been joking about for a decade—and even let her play nice with the AI competition. [Alex]: That’s the headline! Apple’s finally caught up—and maybe, for Apple users, they’ve leapfrogged ahead. [Jamie]: Alright, that’s all the nerd level you can handle for today. Thanks for tuning in to the Nerd Level Tech AI Cast! If you enjoyed this episode, remember to subscribe, leave us a review, or just shout “Hey Siri, play Nerd Level Tech AI Cast” at your device.
