What you'll do...
At Walmart, Distinguished Engineers are enterprise-wide technical leaders who shape long-term strategy, drive innovation at scale, and influence outcomes across multiple organizations.

We are seeking a Distinguished Engineer to lead the evolution of our Last Mile Driver Platform, focusing on Driver Trust & Safety, Earnings, Compliance, Risk Controls and Scalable Systems. This role combines deep technical expertise with cross-functional leadership to solve complex, high-impact problems affecting driver experience, platform integrity, and regulatory adherence.

You will operate as a force multiplier, setting technical direction, mentoring engineers, and aligning business, product, and engineering strategies across the enterprise.

What You'll Do:
Enterprise Technical Leadership (Walmart Distinguished Expectations) • Define and drive multi-year technical strategy and architecture aligned with Walmart's business priorities.
• Act as a company-wide technical authority, influencing decisions across multiple teams and domains.
• Lead cross-organizational initiatives that span engineering, product, compliance, and operations.
• Establish and uphold engineering excellence standards across scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability.
• Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, using metrics and data to guide strategic decisions.

Platform Architecture & Scale • Design and operate highly scalable distributed systems supporting 15,000+ transactions per second with high availability and low latency.
• Drive architectural patterns for resilience, fault tolerance, and observability.
• Lead modernization toward cloud-native, event-driven architectures.

Driver Trust, Safety & Compliance • Architect systems to ensure driver trust and safety, including fraud detection, identity verification, and risk mitigation.
• Build scalable solutions for regulatory compliance across regions, including driver onboarding, verification, and audits.
• Partner with legal and compliance teams to translate regulatory requirements into technical systems.
• Proven Experience building Risk and Compliance Platform.

Driver Earnings & Experience • Lead design of earnings platforms, including real-time earning calculation, incentives, payouts, and transparency tools.
• Experienced with ACH , Instant Payout, Payment processor integration
• Use experimentation and analytics to optimize driver engagement, retention, and fairness.

Security, IT Compliance, Identity & Data Protection • Define enterprise-grade Authentication (AuthN) and Authorization (AuthZ) strategies.
• Drive implementation for ITGC, SOX
• Ensure data security, privacy, and governance across all systems.
• Drive adoption of secure-by-design principles and compliance with internal and external standards.

Data Platform & AI Enablement • Architect and scale a modern data lake and data platform supporting batch and real-time workloads.
• Leverage AI/ML and knowledge systems for fraud detection, compliance automation, and driver insights.
• Enable data-driven decision-making through high-quality, governed data systems.

Vendor Integrations & Ecosystem • Lead integrations with multiple external vendors (payments, identity, compliance, risk, etc.).
• Build extensible frameworks for rapid and secure partner onboarding.

Cross-Functional Alignment & Influence • Align engineering efforts with business goals, product strategy, and operational needs.
• Influence across a matrixed organization, driving consensus among diverse stakeholders.
• Communicate complex technical strategies in terms of business impact and measurable outcomes.

Mentorship & Talent Development • Mentor and coach engineers across levels, fostering technical growth and leadership development.
• Raise the bar for engineering craftsmanship and innovation across Walmart.
• Contribute to hiring, talent strategy, and succession planning.

What You'll Bring:
Experience • 20+ years of experience in software engineering, including significant time in large-scale distributed systems.
• Proven impact at Staff+, Principal, or Distinguished Engineer level.
• Experience leading enterprise-wide or cross-domain technical initiatives.
• Proven domain knowledge for gig delivery or Risk & Fraud or Earning & Compliance.

Technical Expertise • Deep expertise in:• Distributed systems and high-scale architectures
• AuthN/AuthZ and security frameworks
• Data platforms, data lakes, and real-time processing
• Cloud-native technologies (AWS, GCP, Azure)
• API design and third-party integrations

• Strong understanding of compliance, risk, and regulatory systems.

AI & Data • Experience applying AI/ML to real-world problems (fraud, recommendations, automation).
• Knowledge of data governance, privacy, and security frameworks.

Leadership & Walmart Distinguished Traits • Demonstrated ability to:• Influence across organizations without direct authority
• Drive alignment across engineering, product, and business
• Translate ambiguity into clear technical strategy and execution

  • Strong communication skills with executives and technical teams.
  • Track record of delivering impact through metrics-driven decision-making.

Preferred Qualifications • Experience in gig economy, marketplace, mobility, or last-mile delivery platforms (e.g., Spark, rideshare, logistics).
• Background in Trust & Safety, risk systems, or compliance engineering.
• Experience scaling platforms serving millions of users or drivers.
• Strong product mindset focused on customer (driver) experience.

Minimum Qualifications...
